THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR FIRST 500 FOLLOWERS
It’s not a big number in the realm of reality here on the planet Earth, but over the past 4,000 tweets, I’ve built a following I’m proud of. It’s been amazing for me and not one of them was purchased!
In the days of artificially inflated numbers, profiles and followings and likes can sometimes look as fake as an airbrushed Kardashian. It’s hard to believe anything you see or read anymore. But that number is solid and honest.

I’ve found success in hashtagging – have you? Maybe you’re new to the scene and aren’t quite sure about what to do. Or you’ve been around a while and haven’t seen a need for it. But are your numbers growing daily? Or have they reached a plateau?

For those who don't have time for video, here are some things to remember as you amass your first 500 followers:
CHECK YOUR GENRE
Go visit the competition and see what tags they use. Are they accurate for your genre? Those who don’t know you but know the genre may find you with a good tweet using the tag they’re searching for. There is nothing against using an already used hashtag. The more people that use one, the more visibility it will get!
CHECK THE TIME
Depending on how your followers use Twitter, it may not be the tag, but the time of day. Watching your analytics to see when the majority of your impressions come in will show when your ‘Tweeps’ are active. Tweet when they’re around and get more exposure! If your audience is mostly in another time zone, schedule your tweets accordingly so they will see them.
CHECK THE QUANTITY
Don’t overload your tweets with hashtags. Keep it to one or two. One long tweet of every word hashtagged is hard to read and easily ignored. Test which ones get big impressions and stick with them! And when using multiple words in a hashtag, capitalize the first letter of each word to help fans read it easier. #LongTagsCanLookLikeThis
